Something to talk about

Something to talk about

Back in the 80’s and 90’s I did concert sound for many artists. Some I knew and some I had heard before and some I saw for the first time on the road. Bonnie Raitt I listened to her album Nick of Time many many times.

I was really happy to find out that she would be playing at a festival I was working at in support of her new album Luck of the Draw. Festival are a special kind of hell for the tech people since you need to turn around the stage very quickly once one band has played so you can get the next act on quickly. Festivals NEVER run on time. Generally the only performer who gets to soundcheck is the headliner and everyone else is grab and go.

It was mid afternoon on a very hot day. I was tired and sweaty and ready for a break, but that wasn’t due for a few more hours. I had just finished labeling the console so I could be ready for whoever was next. I checked all the inputs were live and set the levels for my best guess when the opening chords and backbeat of Something to Talk About started to ring out. It was a good day for me, because I got it damn close right out of the gate and I found myself in that magical place that I only find in certain circumstances (Like D/s). It was soul lifting. Take a moment and have a listen for yourself.

People are talking, talking ’bout people
I hear them whisper, you won’t believe it
They think we’re lovers kept under cover
I just ignore it but they keep saying
We laugh just a little too loud
Stand just a little too close
We stare just a little too long
Maybe they’re seein’ something we don’t, darling

Let’s give ’em something to talk about
Let’s give ’em something to talk about
Let’s give ’em something to talk about
How about love?

I didn’t know it..

But this song was going to mean something more to me many years later. My life has been complicated and full of unexpected changes and I ended up on another continent. I have been here for a decade and it has been good. But things changed yet again.

I feel so foolish, I never noticed
You’d act so nervous, could you be falling for me?
It took the rumor to make me wonder
Now I’m convinced I’m going under
Thinkin’ ’bout you every day
Dream ’bout you every night
I’m hoping that you feel the same way
Now that we know it, let’s really show it, darling

Version 2.0

In my time here across the pond I learned that I needed D/s as part my life and my love. Molly and I have gone our different ways and have found we have different desires and needs. But without her, I wouldn’t have found out what I am and what I need.

Let’s give ’em something to talk about
A little mystery to figure out, babe
Let’s give ’em something to talk about
How about love?

Let’s give ’em something to talk about, babe
A little mystery to figure out
Let’s give ’em something to talk about
How about love?

LDR, again…

I have a new and completely unexpected person in my life, and she is wonderful, Our relationship is complicated, weird, strange and fulfilling in a way that neither of us expected. We are just at the beginning and we have a long way to go but I know that we will reach our destination together. With us as a team.

Ooh, listen to ’em baby
A little mystery won’t hurt ’em
Let’s give ’em something to talk about
How about our love, love, love, love

So yeah, everyone else can talk and be surprised, but it is our talk that matters and we do it everyday in so many ways. We share and teach each other about the things that do and don’t matter to us. Like which laundry detergent I might like, or whether she will edge when she is told. It is in those conversation that our lives together are communicated and as long as we talk about our love, we will always give them something to talk about.
